Put down the telephone and turn off the computer. Sometimes you simply have to communicate by writing a letter. Perhaps your landlord is not sending back your security deposit, the new toaster you just bought is already broken, or you want to tell the president of a company something important. A letter is in order.
Forgotten how to even write one? Here are the simple steps:
First, you'll need a heading. Go to the center of the paper and write your address, the street on the first line, the city on the next, and then today's date on the following line.
Now skip a line and go to the left hand margin, and write your greeting: "Dear Mr. Smith" followed by a comma. Skip a line.
Next comes the body of the letter, which is where you give all the information, news, or other data that you'd like to share with the person to whom you are writing. Be kind, concise, and if you end the body of the letter with a question, they will undoubtedly have to write back. Skip a line. The closing of the letter comes now, lined up with the heading at the top of the letter. Go to the center of the paper and write "Sincerely", "Best regards", "Love", or something appropriate. Then sign your name.
Your letter is now ready to send. Remember the old advice that it is sometimes best to reread a letter the day after you have written it, before you have sent it. Sometimes we write words that we don't mean, or phrases are written that don't sound the way that they are intended. Somehow, these come to light after 24 hours, and you might end up changing something before you mail it.
Write a letter today! It is still a terrific form of communication!
